Imminent execution of Christians
in Indonesia
PRESS RELEASE FROM JUBILEE CAMPAIGN (contact Wilfred Wong - 0207 219 5129 for further
details or interviews). March 10th 2006 Christian human rights organisation, the Jubilee
Campaign, has received reports of plans to execute 3 Indonesian Christians this
month. The 3 Christian men in Sulawesi, Indonesia, Fabianus Tibo, 60, Dominggus
Da Silva, 42, and Marinus Riwu, 48, were charged with murder and inciting
communal conflict in Poso, central Sulawesi, in 2000, and were sentenced to
death. The police chief of Palu, central Sulawesi, Brigadier General Oengroseno,
announced in early March that their execution would be carried out this month. The men were not given a fair trial. The judges did not
take into account the testimonies of the witnesses for the accused. These 3
Christians were simply trying to help unarmed Christian civilians who were under
violent attack from Muslims and were in no way responsible for inciting the
conflict. Although the men were convicted of murder and of fomenting sectarian
violence, a great deal of evidence exists to show that they are innocent of any
such crimes. A number of credible witnesses testified that the 3 men had come to
the conflict area for the sole purpose of rescuing women and children and
removing them from the areas of danger. The 3 men maintain their innocence and say that their
convictions resulted from irregularities during their trial. For instance, they
contend that the judge in their case neglected even to consider the testimony of
thirteen different witnesses (including the defendants themselves) that would
have exonerated them. One such witness was Irwanto Hasan, who at the time was a
member of the Poso Police Intelligence Division. He testified that the 3
Christians were in fact engaged in a humanitarian exercise when they were
arrested. They had come to Poso after hearing reports that a Catholic Church
there had been burned in the sectarian violence. They entered the conflict zone
to evacuate children from a church-run school in the village of Moengko. On the
morning of May 23, 2000, a Muslim mob entered the village and set fire to the
church-run school. The 3 Christian men and the students escaped out the back
door while the building burned to the ground. On March 9 the Jakarta Post reported that the case
against the 3 Christians was being reviewed by the district court in Palu,
central Sulawesi. This is a surprising development since their first judicial
review was rejected in 2004. Christian observers in central Sulawesi are
optimistic but cautious. Optimistic that the review is even taking place but
cautious because Palu is a stronghold of Islamic fundamentalism. Despite the fact that many Muslims participated in the
conflict, and some Muslims even now continue to perpetrate vicious terrorist
attacks against Christians in central Sulawesi, not a single Muslim has so far
been prosecuted and convicted for murdering Christians or for inciting communal
conflict in that region. For example, on 29 October 2005, 4 Christian
schoolgirls in central Sulawesi, were attacked by Muslim militants. Three of the
girls were beheaded and one seriously injured. On the morning of December 31st
2005, a bomb was set off at a Christian marketplace in Palu city, central
Sulawesi, killing at least 8 people and injuring about 54 others. Jubilee Campaign has been campaigning to stop the
execution of these 3 Christian men and is calling for them to be exonerated and
released from prison. Jubilee has also been campaigning for the Indonesian
authorities to apprehend and punish those responsible for the lethal attacks
against Christians in central Sulawesi. Jubilee Campaign's Researcher and
Parliamentary Officer, Wilfred Wong, says, " Fabianus Tibo, Dominggus Da
Silva, and Marinus Riwu should be highly commended for helping to rescue the
school children from being burned to death by the Muslim mob, instead of being
faced with execution. The Indonesian authorities have shown their blatant
anti-Christian prejudice by giving high priority to prosecuting Christians in
central Sulawesi while completely failing to stop the vicious terrorist attacks
against Christians and failing to have those responsible for such attacks
prosecuted and punished. If these 3 Christians are executed, this will not only
be a gross miscarriage of justice but is likely to re-ignite Muslim-Christian
violence in central Sulawesi. Pray that these 3 Christians will not be executed
and that they will be exonerated and freed. Pray also for the protection of
Christians in central Sulawesi and that those responsible for the anti-Christian
violence are brought to justice." Northern Catholic Conference - June 2nd - 4th The Northern Catholic conference was set up to
help see spiritual renewal for our Catholic families, and brother’s and
sister’s of the faith. It was initiated by a group of Northern Catholics,
including Frankie Mulgrew, Fr Jimmy Collins, David Alton and Myles Dempsey to
see a large event where the great gifts and blessings of the Catholic Church are
illuminated over the prayers and celebrations of the weekend. It will be similar
to the ‘New Dawn’ conference in Walsingham and ‘Celebrate’ in Ilfracombe
and will be held in the North of England area. This event aims to support and
build up our brother’s and sisters of the faith who are the salt and light
bearers for today’s Gospel. The first conference was staged last year and
proved to have a overwhelming response attracting over 500 people at the Adelphi
hotel in Liverpool, it was inspiring to hear the feedback of delegates who said
they had been moved to a deeper level in their faith/relationship with God
through the speakers and celebrations of the weekend. And some moving stories in
particular were of people who had re-discovered a lost faith. So this year the conference will be hosted at
the Southport Floral Hall complex on from Friday 2nd - 4th June (Pentecost
weekend). The speakers include: Frances Hogan - The Irish Theologian, her
recordings and books have inspired nations. Lord David Alton - David has vigorously
campaigned for human rights not just in the UK but throughout the world. John Pridmore - An ex-gangster who led a life
of brutal violence. This all changed in 1991 after he nearly killed a man
outside a bar. Since then, over 500,000 have heard his inspiring story and
challenging message. Fr Stan Fortuna - From the Francisicans of the
Renewal in New York, Fr Stan travels all round the world giving he’s radical
interpretation of the Gospel through he’s music and he’s preaching. Myles Dempsey - Founder of the New Dawn
conference in Walsingham, Myles' ministry of preaching and healing is always in
great demand. Fr Jimmy Collins - Founder of the conference
Fr Jimmy has been a priest of the Liverpool Archdiocese for over 60 years. He
runs the Advent Healing Group. A leading healing ministry organisation in the
Archdiocese of Liverpool. Steve Murray - The global travelled mime
artist. His ministry depicts the phrase, ‘a picture paints a thousand
words.’ Jimmy Cricket - The legendary Irish comedian
takes to the stage on the Saturday evening to help us reflect on the laughing
face of God. Our theme this year will be ‘Seeds of Hope
for the Future’ and we do hope you can join us. Over the weekend which begins on Friday 2nd
June at 7pm, there will be Mass, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, talks,
workshops, and a healing and reconciliation service. As well as the Main conference we will run
simultaneously a creche and two small youth conferences, for the ages of 5-10
and 11-16, each catered for by youth leaders outstanding in their field, as well
as inputs from some of the main speakers. We believe not only for the main
conference but also for our young people in the best teaching possible in a way
that is very real and reachable to them. To register call 0781 206 4746 or 0151 521
